Let’s get your garden furniture in shape so you can make the most of your garden.
Summer is almost here. When the sun shows up, there’s no better place to be than a nice and clean backyard. Whether you relax with your family, take a nap or have a party with your friends, outdoors is always great. To make the best of your outdoor time, you want your furniture to sparkle. Clean it before you use it. A proper cleaning will not only ensure your comfort. It will also give your items a longer life.
In this article we will learn some tricks to clean your outdoor furniture like a pro.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WOOD.

Clean your wooden garden furniture before summer.

Teak garden furniture requires low maintenance.
Let’s start with the easy one: teak wood. Teak garden furniture requires low to no maintenance. The wood can withstand almost any condition. There is a good reason why people build their swimming pool and boat decks from teak. Yet, your teak set will still enjoy a soft cleaning. There are plenty of mild and oil-based soaps on the market. Make sure to read the instructions before you use it. Avoid products with too much chemicals. Not only will it destroy the wood, but the water wastes will aslo hurt the environnement. All you need is a basic soapy water solution. Mix ¼ cup of ammonia with two tablespoons of white vinegar and one quart of warm water. After a couple of years, a light sanding will help lengthen the wood life.

METAL FOREVER.

Learn how to clean your metal furniture.

Wear your armor and get ready to fight the metal biggest enemies: oxidation and rusting.
Metal outdoor furniture is usually made out from aluminwum, cast iron, or wrought iron. Cleaning your metal every year will give the furniture a most needed protection.
No need to rush. Before you start cleaning, look for imperfections. Remove oxidized blemishes on your aluminum pieces. To do so, use a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water. A metal polisher will also do the job. Do not use chemicals like trisodium phosphate or ammonia on aluminum. Those would cause oxidation and damage the surfaces.
Sand down rusted areas on your iron furniture. Remove the affected paint and apply a rust-resistant primer. After the primer is dry, apply a new layer of rust-resistant paint.
Once you finish the repairs, wash off your metal furniture with your garden hose.

MIND YOUR WICKER.

Synthetic rattan furniture is easy to maintain.

Cleaning wicker and cleaning hardwood furniture is similar.
Quality synthetic rattan is easy to use. Put it in your garden and you can use it for years. You don’t need to spend much time cleaning your items. After winter, all you need to do is removing the dust, pollen and dirt. Here again, the process is straight-forward. Mix two tablespoons white vinegar with ¼ cup of ammonia and one quart of warm water. You can also buy ready-made products in your local store. Mild oil soap produces great results. If you buy ready-made product, remember to read directions for diluting. Whichever cleaner you choose, apply it with a soft brush. Using a brush allows you to remove the dust between the weaves.
Rinse the wicker with your hose every two or three weeks during summer.

PLASTIC IS FANTASTIC.

Plastic is an option to consider for your outdoor furniture.

Plastic outdoor furniture is easy to maintain and can bring a touch of fun in your backyard.
There are plenty of products to clean your plastic furniture. Yet again, you can prepare everything yourself. Mix one quart of warm water with ¼ cup vinegar. You can also mix ½ cup washing soda with a gallon of warm water. Another option is to mix one gallon of warm water with tree tablespoons of dishwasher detergent. Do not use detergent on your white plastics as the bleach could damage the material.
If stains remain, wipe it with clean rag wet with white vinegar. Putting baking soda on a wet sponge is also a popular DIY abrasive. This will not scratch your plastic but should remove the stain. Never use abrasive cleaning materials such as steel wool or metal brush. It will damage the surface and leave ugly marks.
To restore the shine of clean plastic, spray some WD-40 to the furniture, then wipe it with a clean and dry towel.
As with the other materials, use your garden hose to rinse away the grime.

CLEAN YOUR OUTDOOR FURNITURE FABRIC.

Cleaning the outdoor fabric is often more important than cleaning the furniture itself.

If you can remove the outdoor fabrics from your furniture, clean it in your washing machine. Follow the instructions on the tag. Avoid dryer so you don’t shrink the fabric. Air dry the clean fabric before replacing it on your furniture.
Washing cushions is not as easy. Putting the cushions in the washing machine would compromise their shape. If your cushions don’t have cleaning instructions, try the following. Mix one teaspoon borax, one teaspoon mild dish soap and one quart of warm water. Put your cleaning solution in a spray bottle. Spray both sides of the cushions, including the zip and the grooves. Let the cushions dry for about 15 minutes, then spray down with your hose. Dry your clean cushions in a standing position. After cleaning, vacuum or brush off your cushions. This will remove the remaining dirt.
Use the same cleaning technique for your umbrella fabrics or gazebo covers.
