We manufactured boat wood furniture for a new restaurant in Balikpapan.
We created furniture with reclaimed boat wood for a new restaurant in the island of Kalimantan. We source traditional pirogues from Indonesia. We look for old boats left unused on the shores. We call these typical boats from the archipelago “perahu”. Indonesian people use them for fishing. Fishermen sail the seas around Bali, East Timor and Java to catch tuna and red snapper fishes. When the boats gets too old and beyond repair, we buy it. It is better for the Indonesian fishermen to sell us the washed up boat and use the money to build a new one. They can then go fishing in safe conditions. It is important for us to know that they can provide their families with a sustainable source of income. We then cut the old “perahu” into pieces and turn the hardwood parts into furniture. The idea is to fight wastes and give the reclaimed timber a new life. We turn the teak boat wood into functional items to use in restaurants and houses.
Boat wood furniture is ideal to create long-standing outdoor items. The boat wood furniture brings a rustic and authentic vibe to the decor. We manufactured these dining sets for a restaurant in Balikpapan in Indonesia. We created tables and chairs with reclaimed teak slats and industrial iron frames. Fishermen maintain their boat with a new layer of colorful paint every year. Painting new layers of primary colors allow the wood to better resists the ocean salt, water and sun. The sea water and tropical sun removes part of the paint and creates a distressed effect. The boat timber still has nail holes, scratches and paint remains. These marks gives the unique piece of furniture its soul. We keep the original scratches and layer of paints. The result is a striking set of boat wood furniture.
